Antonia Kerney advocates for seniors in Washington
VOICE of the Valley — October 9, 2007
Antonia Kerney of the Greater Maple Valley Community Center and delegate for the Washington State Association of Senior Centers was one of more than 100 aging network advocates to visit members of Congress on September 18, 2007, in order to raise issues related to America’s seniors and those who work for them.
Kerney visited the offices of Senator Maria Cantwell, Senator Patty Murray and U.S. Representative David Reichert, to express concern that many low-income seniors still are not receiving the help they are eligible for under Medicare, to pay for their prescription drugs and other health care costs. She also pointed out the significant shortfall in funding of Older Americans Act (OAA) programs, which help seniors stay healthy and independent, and urged Congress to increase appropriations for OAA.
Kerney was participating in the Nation Council on Aging’s 2007 Advocacy Day. NCOA is the oldest national aging organization in the country. Is mission is to improve the lives of older Americans, and NCOA regularly advocates for seniors in Congress. Its programs help older people remain healthy and independent, access benefits programs, find jobs and discover meaningful ways to continue contributing to society. A non-profit organization with a national network of more than 14,000 organizations and leaders, NCOA was founded in 1950 and is based in Washington D.C.
The Washington State Association of Senior Centers’ mission is to enhance, educate and support those working with the aging population. To find out more about this organization, please visit www.wsasc.org.
